Hindu Makkal Katchi State president Arjun Sampath on Friday announced his party’s Madurai candidates’ list for the Assembly election and introduced them to the media on the Collectorate premises
Mr. Sampath came with about 20 cadres in a few vehicles to the Collector’s office to file a petition requesting to change either the date for receiving nominations or the venue for receiving them as it may cause trouble for the devotees coming to witness Lord Kallalagar’s entry into the Vaigai during the Chithirai festival on April 22.
However, Mr. Sampath also used the premises to introduce the candidates contesting from eight of the 10 constituencies in the district.
As it was a government holiday on Friday for Ugadi, the Collector’s office was deserted, except for a few officials in the election section. The police personnel on the premises did not intervene. Mr. Sampath also explained his party’s key election promises and raised slogans along with his party members, following which they left the premises.
When contacted, a senior official from the district administration said that it was a violation of model code as political activities were prohibited in government office.
“Appropriate action will be taken after consulting the Collector,” the official said.
Candidate list
Mr. Sampath announced candidates for eight of the ten constituencies in Madurai district, except Tirumangalam and Usilampatti. The list included a transgender, M. Anusuya Sree, who will contest from Madurai South.
Other candidates were N. Soundarya (Madurai North), T.A. Visakan (Madurai East), M. Solai Kannan (Madurai West), R. Balasubramanian (Madurai Central), N. Durai Rajan (Tirupparankundram), V. Ananda Jothi (Melur) and Kamaraj (Sholavandan).
