The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday turned down the State government's plea to pass a common order permitting jallikattu in more than 187 places in 13 districts between February and May this year.
A Division Bench of Justices Chitra Venkataraman and R. Karuppiah told Additional Advocate General (AAG) Guru Krishnakumar that it would not pass a blanket order.
Separate writ pleas
Organisers of individual events would have to obtain permission by filing separate writ petitions.
The observations were made before adjourning to February 23, the hearing on a batch of writ petitions filed both in favour as well as against a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests on July 11, banning the use of bulls, bears, monkeys, tigers, panthers and lions as performing animals.
Passing interim orders in the batch of cases on January 12, the court had permitted jallikattu at Avaniapuram, Palamedu, Alanganallur (all in Madurai district), Peiyasuriyur (Tiruchi district) and Siravayal and Kandupatty (Sivaganga district) — between January 15 and 29.
