The Madras High Court Bench here on Wednesday closed a habeas corpus petition filed by the father of suspected Tamil extremist R. Thiruselvam (33) of Tamilar Viduthalai Padai, accusing the Q Branch police of planning to kill him in a fake encounter.
Justice A. Selvam and Justice V.S. Ravi closed the case after recording the submission made by the police that Thiruselvam was remanded in judicial custody on March 11 in connection with a case related to seizure of an explosive substance behind Reliance Market here in February this year.
In his petition, also filed on March 11, K. Raman (90), hailing from Kumachipatti village in Kallal taluk of Sivaganga district, had alleged that the police had detained his son illegally and sought a direction to the police to produce him before the court. Claiming that his son had been absconding since 1999 when Kallal police registered a murder case against him, the petitioner said since then the police had been repeatedly harassing his family members by making regular enquiries about his whereabouts.
“Only at about 8 p.m. on March 10, I came to know that my son was detained illegally by the Q Branch police,” the petitioner said, and accused the police of not following guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in D.K. Basu’s case at the time of arresting his son.
