“Be present in the court during the next hearing of the case on June 16”

The Madras High Court Bench here on Tuesday recalled a non-bailable arrest warrant (NBW) issued by it on Friday against S. John Michael Raj, Controller of Examinations, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, and also secretary for State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) conducted annually for assessing eligibility of candidates aspiring to be recruited as lecturers in universities and colleges.

Justice K. Ravichandra Baabu recalled the warrant after Mr. Raj appeared before him and submitted that he was not communicated properly about the statutory notices issued to him by the court on April 29 in three contempt of court applications and therefore he could not appear before the court on June 2 and 6 when the applications had been listed for recording his presence.

Accepting the explanation given by the contemnor, the judge pardoned him on condition that he should be present in the court during the next hearing of the case on June 16 too. Three women aspirants to the post of lecturer had filed the contempt applications accusing the SLET secretary of not obeying orders passed by the court in their writ petitions on June 19 last year.
