The Madras High Court bench here early this week ordered notice to the vice-chancellor and the registrar of the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) on a petition seeking a direction to the university to conduct the election to the senate.
The petitioner, M. Paraman, a former senate member, claimed in his petition that the senate election was scheduled to be held on October 24, 2010. But the election was postponed after the High Court bench stayed the election based on cases filed by two individuals challenging the election. According to the petitioner, the stay was vacated and the cases were dismissed in 2010 by a division bench.
However, the University postponed the election for three years without stating any reason, alleged Mr. Paraman. According to the petitioner, he submitted a representation to the registrar and the vice-chancellor of MKU on July 23, 2013 calling for the election to be conducted. However, while the election to the syndicate was held on August 12, 2013, the senate poll was yet to take place, he claimed. Mr. Paraman added that he was eligible to contest the senate election.
In his petition, he sought a direction to the vice-chancellor and the registrar to conduct an election to elect 15 senate members as per the Madurai Kamaraj University Act, 1965.
Justice T. Raja ordered notice to the university authorities and adjourned the case by two weeks.
