HC orders counselling for BE graduate in custody

August 27, 2013 03:27 pm | Updated 03:27 pm IST - MADURAI:

The Madras High Court bench here has directed Tiruchi Central Prison authorities to arrange psychological counselling for a BE graduate, who stabbed his former girlfriend and her family after the girl refused to marry him.

Justice N. Kirubakaran gave the direction while hearing the plea filed by M. Athisayaraj, the father of the BE graduate, A. Maheshkumar.

Maheshkumar was booked in a criminal case by the Pallathur police after he allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend, her sister and parents at their home on July 19, 2013. The girl’s father is an advocate and mother is a lecturer.

In his petition, Mr. Athisayaraj claimed that the members of the advocates association in Karaikudi passed a resolution not to appear on behalf of Maheshkumar to file a bail petition as he had stabbed an advocate and his family members.

According to the petitioner, the girl and her family members have recovered from their injuries, but his son is unable to obtain bail because of the resolution passed by the advocates in Karaikudi.

Mr. Athisayaraj claimed in his petition that Maheshkumar was selected to participate in the counselling for ME admission scheduled on August 24. He had sought a direction from the court to permit his son to take part in the counselling with police protection.

Additional government pleader Ayiram Selvakumar submitted that Maheshkumar had committed the crime in a planned manner.

The girl and the petitioner’s son were classmates and were in love, but the girl broke up with him, he said. When the case came up for hearing on Monday, Justice Kirubakaran noted that Maheshkumar needed psychological counselling. He further noted that the ME counselling was already over.

Mr. Ayiram Selvakumar submitted that Maheshkumar was lodged in Pudukottai sub-jail, but the government hospital in Pudukottai did not have a psychological counsellor. Then, the judge impleaded the Superintendent of Tiruchi Central Prison as a respondent suo motu, and directed the prison authorities to shift Maheshkumar to the Tiruchi Central Prison and arrange psychological counselling for him in the Tiruchi Government Hospital.
