The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday directed that fresh appointments be made for the selection committee of Child Welfare Committees (CWC) by following the Tamil Nadu Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children ) Draft Rules, 2016, made in exercise of powers conferred under Section 110 of The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children ) Act, 2015, which states that the State government can frame model rules and until then the Central government rules will be applicable in such matters.

A Division Bench of Justices K. K. Sasidharan and G. R. Swaminathan observed that a retired High Court Judge should be the Chairperson of the selection committee, with the District Collector and Commissioner of Police as members. Fresh appointments should be made after the selection committee was formed with the above members. The petition was posted for further hearing to August 28.
