Ahead of ‘Navarathri,’ the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation has organised an exhibition and sale of ‘kolu’ dolls at Poompuhar showroom in West Veli Street.

Navarathri is celebrated between September 25 and October 3. The dolls on display are made of papier mache and clay and are priced from Rs.10 to Rs. 4,500. Lightweight papier mache dolls of gods and goddesses which are upto 3.5 feet in height have been very popular among non-resident Indians who find it easy to take with them abroad, showroom manager P. Balakrishnan said on Sunday.

“Dolls of Lord Krishna, Goddess Meenakshi and other deities find an important place in every ‘kolu’ arrangement and are sold in the showroom throughout the year,” he said.

Set dolls

A number of doll sets depicting scenes from mythological epics and important festivals and celebrations in the country were in demand, he said.

Among the sets on display were ‘Ashtalakshmi’ set, ‘Dasavatharam’ set, ‘Aarupadai veedu’ set and doll sets depicting celebrations such as weddings.

“The doll sets which represent city-centric events such as Azhagar entering the Vaigai are popular among our customers here. The ‘girivalam’ doll set from Tiruvannamalai which includes dolls of Lord Shiva and Arunagirinathar was introduced last year and still remains a unique set to be kept on display,” Mr. Balakrishnan said.

The exhibition and sale, with 10 per cent discount, will go on till October 4.
