In a novel initiative, the authorities of Madurai Central Prison organised a guidance programme on higher studies for the children of life convicts here on Sunday.
The children of 27 life convicts, who are awaiting the results of the Plus Two examinations, took part in the guidance programme, said R. Arivudainambi, Superintendent of Madurai Central Prison.
Academicians and representatives from non-governmental organisations gave the students, counselling on higher studies.
“This is the first time we have organised this guidance programme. The life convicts also attended the programme with their children and spouses. We will extend individual assistance to all the students in further sessions after results are published,” Mr. Arivudainambi told The Hindu on Monday.
AssuranceRanjitham, Principal of St. Teresa Teacher’s Training Institute, who counselled the students and their families said, “In the two-hour session, we spoke on the courses students can opt for and future career opportunities. The children told us the areas of their interest and their expected marks. Representatives from various educational institutions have pledged to help the students with fee concession.”
“At least five students wanted to pursue nursing course. It was great to see the prisoners bond with their families. They spent the whole day with their families,” she added.
The principals of various arts and science colleges, Industrial Training Institutes, nursing colleges, teacher training institutes and polytechnic institutions interacted with the students.
InitiativeThe programme was an initiative of the Madurai prison authorities, under the guidance of the Additional Director General of Police (Prisons).
