The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Government Rajaji Hospital here got a refurbished and renovated pre-operative ward on Wednesday which would provide additional comforts to heart patients.

Inaugurated by B. Santhakumar, Dean, GRH, the ward has several comforts for patients in both pre and post-operative care as well as for doctors and staff.

The 26-bed new facility has three wards equipped with air-conditioners and modern beds found in corporate hospitals, said R. Raghunath, Head, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Hospital authorities said Rs.29 lakh had been spent on renovation works. The department had done 542 heart operations so far this year, which included open heart surgeries, valve replacements, closed heart surgeries, Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), besides minor heart procedures.

Around 95 per cent of these surgical procedures were done under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, which was being implemented here from 2012, Dr. Raghunath said.

The department got 1,300 outpatients in a month and two surgeries were performed on an average every day.

Only recently, the Cathalab in the department was revamped. The lab had an auto-analyser which was designed to conduct various medical tests with minimal human assistance in a short time. It had come as a boon to several patients who earlier had to wait for long at the Centralised Biochemistry Lab in the hospital for various medical tests, Dr. Raghunath added.

A total of Rs.5.25 crore had been spent on the development of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the GRH with grants allotted under Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, he added.
