Cadre of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a demonstration at Muthaiyapuram here on Sunday, demanding the state government to take over SPIC – (Southern Petro Chemical Industries Corporation) and TAC – (Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals,) soda ash manufacturing company, in the interest of the workforce.
K. Kanagaraj, State executive council member of the CPI (M), who took part in the agitation, in his address said both officers and employees of various cadres in these companies were left in the lurch as these companies had turned “sick.”
The employees of TAC had been bearing the brunt of non-payment of salaries from the last month. So far, 61 officers in the company had been terminated citing financial crunch.
Even essential services, including drinking water, power supply and canteen facility, were disrupted in the TAC. Hence, the government should consider reviving these companies, he said.
The demonstration was presided over by V. Arumugam, district president, CITU. R. Russell, state secretary of CITU, and others spoke.
