Healthcare facilities at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here got a boost on Sunday with the inauguration of an improved neo-natal intensive care unit, burns ward and an exclusive wing for master medical check-up among other facilities.
Dean N. Mohan said that ventilators, incubators and other equipment for post-delivery care had been installed at the improved neo-natal intensive care unit at a cost of Rs. 1.30 crore. Highlighting the other facilities, he said that the plastic surgery department had been renovated at a cost of Rs. 11 lakh and the ophthalmology department had been provided with a world-class screening equipment at a cost of Rs. 16 lakh.
State Health Minister C. Vijaya Basker, who inaugurated the new facilities, said that the Government Hospitals across the State had been allotted Rs.418 crore under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Scheme of which hospitals in Chennai had been allotted more than Rs. 65 crore.
“Nearly, 5.45 lakh people across the State have benefited from the Comprehensive Health Scheme of which 2.8 lakh people have availed of the benefits of the scheme in public hospitals”, he said. “The GRH has availed of Rs. 27 crore as part of the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Scheme. Work on a new post mortem centre at the cost of Rs. 1.3 crore will soon begin”, he added.
Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa and Collector L. Subramanian were present at the event held on the sidelines of the inauguration.
Among the other facilities inaugurated, the nephrology department has been renovated at a cost of Rs. 9 lakh and the ENT department refurbished with new beds and floor tiles laid at an estimate of Rs. 3 lakh. A proposal for a new surgical block at a cost of Rs. 5 crore was submitted to the Minister.
