Functioning of various government departments in the district was badly affected on Thursday as members of Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Association went on a one-day token strike in support of their demands.
The protesting government employees said the Government, besides filling all existing vacancies, should give pay on par with Central Government employees and give effect to the arrears from January 1, 2006. Moreover, house rent, educational assistance, bonus, etc. should be given as it is to the Central Government employees.
The contributory health insurance programme should be withdrawn and, instead, the government should pay the premium.
Functioning of Departments of Revenue and Public Distribution were totally paralysed as all employees participated in the strike. “All 750 employees and officials of Department of Revenue took part in the strike,” said State general secretary of Tamil Nadu Government Officials' Association Gana. Muruganandam.
In support of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association's demands and urging the State Government to give salary on par with the Central pay, members of Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers' Association also went on mass casual leave on Thursday, leaving the primary schools without teachers.

Almost all the Government departments in Kanyakumari district wore a deserted look.
Earlier, the government employees held demonstration in front of collectorate which was led by district president C.R.Raj Kumar.
