Good response for IGNOU courses in prisons

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has seen good response for enrolment to its courses at three prisons in the State- Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchi- during the admissions for July session this year. M. Shanmugham, IGNOU Regional Director, Madurai Regional Centre, which covers 17 districts in the State including Tiruchi and Coimbatore regions, told The Hindu on Sunday that several prisoners have shown interest to pursue undergraduate courses and beyond.

In the Madurai Prison alone, 40 jail inmates had enrolled for the six-month IGNOU preparatory programme for UG courses. In Coimbatore prison, 45 inmates have shown willingness to join the university's courses

The Tiruchi prison too has witnessed inmates' interest for IGNOU courses.
