Even as the ATM break-in at Gomathipuram has created a sense of alarm among the public, one of the accused arrested in connection with the case confessed that he had attempted to loot the machine to pay the equated monthly instalment (EMI) for his vehicle.
The police said that the accused, Saravana Pandian (22) of Pandikoil, who owns a mini-lorry, “confessed” to the attempt along with his friends — a 19-year-old of Pandikoil and Muthuvel (20) of Masthanpatti to pay due for his vehicle.
Muthuvel surrendered before court here on Tuesday. Judicial Magistrate A.R.V. Ravi remanded him in judicial custody in Melur sub-jail till January 9.
V. Balakrishnan, Superintendent of Police, told reporters that the police would soon take custody of the third suspect (Muthuvel).
“We are yet to ascertain whether the accused were involved in the burglary cases that had happened earlier.”
He said the police personnel, who helped thwart the attempt of the burglars, had been rewarded.
But for the timely intervention of the Karuppayoorani patrol team, Rs. 5.5 lakh would have been looted from the ATM, Mr. Balakrishnan said.
