Students should spare some time for sports activities, said Commissioner and Inspector General of Police (Madurai City) Shailesh Kumar Yadav here on Sunday.

Distributing prizes – medals, trophies and certificates - to winners of the chess competitions organised on Adhyapana School campus, by ‘ The Hindu in School’, in association with Thyrocare and Madurai District Chess Association, the Commissioner of Police said that parents should also support the students in this endeavour.

Today, the country was celebrating the victory of Sindhu and Sakshi Malik, who brought laurels by winning silver and bronze at the Rio Olympics respectively, he said and added that more number of such stars should come up. To achieve this goal, the parents had the responsibility to encourage their children to focus on sports.

Speaking on the features of chess, Mr. Shailesh said that it was a mind game and an opportunity to show the skills of the students.

He appreciated the budding stars and asked them to concentrate on the game and become champions like Anand Viswanathan among others.

Adhyapana School senior principal Aruna Visveswar commended the winners on the occasion. Be it sports or academic, sustained practice and hard work would bring in results, she said.

MDCA president Arul Arasu Israel said that the chess association provided special training to talented sports persons, who could not afford to spend on coaching.

Practice and focus

Many children from rural background had mastered the game and it was due to sheer practice and focus, he noted.
