“Give back to the society” was the message given by Madurai Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao while inaugurating The Hindu Education Plus Career Counselling/Fair here on Sunday.
Addressing the students, Mr. Rao said, “Your personal growth can be the first priority. However, it is also important to contribute to the society as we owe everything to it, including our education.”
On choosing a career, Mr. Rao asked the parents to guide and not force their wards to opt for a particular course. “Ultimately, the decision must be made by the students. Let them follow their heart,” he said. “Do not push your child to become an engineer just because you could not become an engineer yourself,” he told the parents.
“Opportunities are plenty in this era of globalisation and information technology. Every course has importance. Diversity in education is important,” he added.
Pointing out that competition had also become tougher in the globalised world, Mr. Rao asked the students to widen their knowledge on various subjects with the help of technology. “Earlier, knowledge was not universally available to everyone in society. On the contrary, today one can learn any subject through the Internet,” he said.
The Collector urged the students and parents to give utmost importance to preserving the environment. “Our forefathers had the wisdom to safeguard the environment. It is important that we preserve it for a sustainable future,” he said.
Cast your vote
Mr. Rao also made a request to all the parents to exercise their right to vote in the Assembly election on May 16. Before inaugurating the fair, he administered a pledge to all the participants to cast their vote in an ethical manner.
He also distributed Sankalp Patra to participating students in which the students could get assurance from their parents to vote in the election.
The event was presented by VIT University and powered by Kalasalingam University. The associate sponsors were K. L. N. College of Engineering, PSNA College of Engineering and Technology and Holy Cross Engineering College. The programme was presented in association with The Hindu Tamil.
