A love affair resulted in a double-murder at Keelakulam Vilakku Road near Muthupatti in this district on Friday night.

Police said that an eight-member gang hacked to death K. Arunkumar, a third-year engineering student and his younger brother K. Suresh. A. Suresh, a friend of the victims, suffered multiple injuries and is said to be in a critical condition at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.

Superintendent of Police C. Sakthivel, who visited the spot, said that love affair was the reason behind the double-murder and three special teams had been formed to nab the culprits. Police said that K. Suresh of Muthupatti, studying first-year BBA at The American College, was in love with a girl studying Plus Two. She was earlier in love with Senthil, a Plus Two student of Idaikattur. The girl had left Senthil last year and was going steady with Suresh. This had angered the former.

Deciding to sort out the issue, Senthil had come with his friends. Both the sides met at Keelakulam Villakku Road near Muthupatti when the fracas turned violent, police said.

Suresh was accompanied by his elder brother Arunkumar, a third-year student of Fathima Michael College of Engineering, and two other friends, including A. Suresh, while Senthil was accompanied by the eight-member armed gang.

The gang attacked Suresh, his brother and his friends. While the brothers died on the spot, A. Suresh suffered multiple injuries, police said.
