A music concert and a variety entertainment programme was organised by Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre in support of the Camila Children’s Cancer Fund on the Gandhi Museum premises here on Sunday.
Old Tamil film songs sung by T.M.S. Selvakumar and his troupe as part of ‘Singing for life’ concert, comedy and mimicry shows formed the highlights of the evening.
“A common misconception among people is that cancer is not curable, when there is a 90 per cent chance of cure for children. People should be aware that they have to approach specialised centres to get cancer treatment for children,” said T. Kasi Viswanathan, Head, Department of Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation, Meenakshi Mission Hospital.
“Nearly 2,500 children are diagnosed with cancer in the State every year. Our hospital treats nearly 200 children with cancer and blood ailments,” he said.
Speaking about the Camila Children’s Cancer Fund, Dr. Viswanathan said that it was created to help poor children affected by cancer.
“A bone marrow transplant facility, which was established last year, has carried out 12 successful transplants,” he said.
