Construction of buildings going on in full swing, say officials

Construction of four police stations in the city was going on in full swing, said officials in Madurai on Tuesday.

After the State Government sanctioned funds and accorded administrative approval, works began for construction of Vilakuthoon, Thilagar Thidal, South Gate, and K. Pudur police stations.

The Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation has been entrusted with the task of construction.

While Vilakuthoon station received Rs. 89.83 lakh, Thilagar Thidal got Rs 90.90 lakh, South Gate Rs. 91.05 lakh, and K. Pudur Rs. 68.35 lakh.

Three of the new stations would have over 7,000 square feet of carpet area while K. Pudur would have a little over 3,500 square feet.

The engineers have planned to provide all basic amenities in the new police stations. The works in Vilakuthoon, Thilagar Thidal and South Gate station would be completed by March while K. Pudur station would be ready by May.

A total of Rs. 23 crore was earmarked for construction of 466 residential flats for police personnel in the Armed Reserve Grounds near Mariamman Temple on New Natham Road. So far, 130 units have been completed and are ready for occupation, while 288 flats were getting final touches and another 48 units would be completed in about two months, officials said.

As for the Madurai District Police, 180 housing units are being constructed at a cost of Rs. 13 crore on the same campus. The work is in progress and a week ago, senior officers led by Additional Director General of Police Lakshmi Prasad inspected the premises, officials added.
