Former Mayor dead

Former Mayor of Tirunelveli Corporation and three-time Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA A. L. Subramanian, died here on Saturday night after a brief illness.

He was 73. Mr. Subramanian represented the Tirunelveli constituency in 1967-70, 1989-91 and 1996-2001 and later became the Mayor in 2006.

The former Mayor was instrumental in the construction of a flyover atop the Chellapandian roundabout in Vannarpet at a cost of Rs. 18 crore, which decongested the vehicular traffic on the Madurai Road to a large extent and the Thiruvalluvar two-tier bridge.

Drinking water project

He was also responsible for a Rs. 22.24-crore scheme to provide drinking water to six wards.

The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University at Abishekapatti and Rani Anna Government College for Women at Pettai came up during his tenure as MLA.

Mr. Subramanian was secretary of M. D. T. Hindu College and M. D. T. Hindu College Higher Secondary School.

He was also a member of the DMK’s high-level committee.

L. Subramanian is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
