A group of Arunthathiyar children submitted a petition to Collector C. Samayamoorthy on Monday alleging that they were being forced to clean the toilet in their school.

The students of Panchayat Union Middle School at Yettankulam near Maanur in the district, alleged that they were being compelled by the headmistress. “She threatens us that she would not forward our scholarship applications if we refuse to clean the toilets,” the students alleged.

A few women, who had accompanied their children to the Collectorate, endorsed these allegations.

Sources in the Office of District Elementary Education Officer said that the headmistress concerned refused to forward the scholarship application of a couple of children from Arunthathiyar community as their parents had not been engaged in conservancy works.

“Since this scholarship is meant only for the children of sanitary workers, she refused to forward it. So the aggrieved parents are levelling baseless allegations against the headmistress,” the sources said.
