Providing access to higher education for students in rural areas is a top priority of the State Government and the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is very determined to see that the Gross Enrolment Ratio goes up in Tamil Nadu, P. Palaniappan, Minister for Higher Education, has said.
He emphasised that the Chief Minister’s Vision 2023 is focusing on holistic development of the State and higher education is one of the key areas in that plan.
Speaking at the Graduation Day of Madurai Kamaraj University College on Alagarkoil Road here on Sunday, he said that lot of measures have been taken in the last one and half years in the field of higher education by opening up of new colleges.
“The Government has sanctioned 22 arts and science colleges, three engineering colleges and seven vocational training institutes. This was done for the benefit of rural students who will now have access to join colleges,” he added.
Mr.Palaniappan has said that the Vision 2023 action plan is focusing on important areas such as roads, transport, higher education, hospitals, healthcare and electricity. Huge money is going to be spent for the overall development of Tamil Nadu.
He informed that the State Government had provided separate funds to universities for starting language labs and curriculum development cells.
Kalyani Mathivanan, MKU Vice-Chancellor, in her Graduation Day address, has said that information revolution is in the process of changing the outlook of educational institutions and the way of life.
“What you have learned so far is mere academic stuff. The actual learning still lies ahead and be willing to take risks and celebrate your achievements. Do not be afraid to try the unusual and always be sensitive to the people’s needs,” she told the young graduates.
J.Balan, Principal in-charge, MKU College, presented a report on the academic and extension activities of the college which was started in the year 1994. There are 2,223 students on rolls right now of which 118 students received their degree certificates at the graduation day.
K.Pitchumani, university Registrar in-charge and M.Rajiakodi, Controller of Examinations, MKU, were among those who attended the function.
