The Vaigai was found glistening in Madurai on Wednesday.

Residents were delighted to see water gushing in the Vaigai under the AV Bridge in the late hours of Wednesday. Several of them took pictures of the rare spectacle. S. Antony, who was returning from his job, said that he was elated to see the river in flow. “I immediately pulled over when I saw water. It is a great sight as there has been an acute water shortage over the last two years,” he said.

While some residents near Yanaikkal bridge dipped their feet in the water, those in Alwarpuram burst crackers. Since the PWD stepped up water release from 760 to 4,860 cusecs from the Vaigai dam at 7:30 a.m.,water is available in Madurai for drinking and irrigation.
