Tamirabharani river flooding on Wednesday evening due to heavy discharge from the dams in Tirunelveli district.

As water is being released from major reservoirs, the Tamirabharani witnessed heavy flood since Wednesday evening and a huge quantity of water is flowing into the Gulf of Mannar.

As there is heavy discharge from Papanasam and Servalar dams, the flood has submerged the steel bridge near the forest office at Mundanthurai, affecting vehicle movement to Mundanthurai, Servalar, Mayilaar Kaani settlement and Papanasam dam for the second day on Thursday.

The steel bridge connects the Lower Camp with Papanasam dam and its surroundings. Tribal people in Mayilaar Kaani are the worst affected as their hamlet remained cut off for the second day on Thursday. Since Mundanthurai, Servalar, Mayilaar Kaani settlement and Papanasam dam regions are beyond mobile phone coverage, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s landline phone connections are the only way to reach the people there. Most of the landline connections at Mundanthurai, Mayilaar Kaani and Servalar remained dead since Wednesday.

People living along the river course have been asked to be alert and those living in low-lying areas have been asked to move to safer places.

All waterfalls at Courtallam, Agasthiyar falls in Papanasam and Manimuthar falls witnessed flood following which visitors were not allowed to take bath.
