Thousands of devotees thronged the Tallakulam Prasanna Venkatachalapathy Perumal Temple tank here for the float festival, which was held on the eleventh day of the Purattasi Brahmotsavam, on Monday.
The presiding deity of the temple, Lord Srinivasa Perumal, was taken with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoomadevi on the grand float, decorated with flowers and colourful appendages.
Unlike last year, when there was water to a depth of only a few feet, this year there was sufficient water to organise the festival.
Water released from the Vaigai dam, which reached the tank through the Tiruppalai channel, filled up the waterbody. In the past, the deities used to be taken around an empty tank to mark the float festival.
Temple authorities said the tank, which was desilted and renovated recently, had been deepened to nine feet which also helped in retaining water.
“As part of the renovation work, which was budgeted at Rs.60 lakh, we had also desilted the tank and cleared the channels which facilitated flow of water. The area around the tank will soon become a park as we are laying paver block roads and installing stone benches there,” they added.
The float was taken in round in the tank in the morning and evening with many devotees witnessing the event.
Various pujas were performed for the deities.
