Four inmates and a warden were injured on Saturday when two groups clashed at the sub-jail at Melur, 30 km from here, police said.

Police said the clash between the groups led by Manikandan and his brother, Prabhudeva, and some others broke out when jail officials were segregating the prisoners for undertaking cooking work. About 30 inmates attacked the brothers, leading to the clash.

The jail warden, who tried to intervene, was stabbed in the hand and head.

A strong police contingent led by DSP Mangaleswaran rushed to the prison to bring the situation under control.

Manikandan and Prabhudeva, who suffered serious injuries, were rescued by police personnel.

Police said doctors were called to the prison to treat them. Two others also suffered injuries in the clash.

The jail warden was taken to hospital by AIADMK MLA Samy, who rushed to the spot.

Police said cases have been registered against 30 inmates.
