Five persons, including two women, were arrested at Idayapatti near here on Wednesday in connection with the murder of onetime ganja peddler P.Baskaran.

The arrested are: S.Valli, who had an illicit relationship with Baskaran, her daughter Alagumeenal, son-in-law K.Balamurugan, R.Ayyappan and a 19-year-old boy.

Police said Valli and Alagumeenal planned to kill Baskaran in retaliation for the murder of Valli’s son S.Balamurugan in January. They sought the help of the trio.

As planned, Valli and Alagumeenal went to Baskaran’s house on Tuesday night and stayed there. When Baskaran was asleep, the trio arrived there at around 2.30 a.m. on Wednesday. The women tightly held the limbs of Baskaran while the trio inflicted injuries on his body with sharp-edged weapons after slashing his throat, Inspector of Police T.Balamurugan said.
