Fishermen operating mechanised boats in Rameswaram began an indefinite strike on Monday to protest the detention of 23 fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday.
N.J. Bose, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Mechanised Boat Fishermen Welfare Association, said that the strike was primarily to draw the government’s attention to the need for finding a permanent solution to the problem of fishermen being detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. A memorandum had been submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
