The General Council of the Coastal Mechanised boat fishermen’s association would meet in Rameswaram on Oct 2 to discuss various issues affecting fishermen including taking out a flotilla to Katchativu on Oct 11 to retrieve the island.

The fishermen’s demands included retrieval of Katchativu (an islet ceded to Sri Lanka by India in 1976), and steps to prevent alleged attacks on fishermen by Lankan navy, Association President S. Venugopal said today.

The fishermen had also been demanding subsidised diesel, and similar concessions extended to the farm sector. The diesel subsidy should be increased from Rs. 1.50 to Rs. three a litre, he said.

About 10,000 fishermen from 13 districts would participate in the meeting, he added.
