Election to five cooperative bodies in the first phase of cooperative elections passed off peacefully here on Friday.
Joint Registrar of Cooperatives and Election Observer M. Palanivelu said that the election was conducted in a smooth manner. Election had to be held for only five out of the 268 cooperative societies on Friday since candidates for other societies were elected unopposed.
In the city, polls were conducted to elect six board of directors of Fenner India Employees’ Cooperative Thrift and Credit Society. Out of the total posts of 11 board of directors, five posts — three women and two belonging to SC/ST — were elected unopposed. The election was conducted by Cooperatives Sub-Register K. Vasanthi.
Nine candidates were in the fray for the remaining six posts. Out of the 254 voters, 214 turned up for voting, held between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Each had to cast six votes.
Other societies that went to polls are Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies at Sakkimangalam and Thenur, Aided School Employees’ Thrift and Credit Society in Tirupparankundram and Agro Service Society at Chellampatti.
