Thick smoke bellowing under a bridge across Sattaiyar surplus channel on Alagarkoil Road in Surveyor Colony slowed down vehicular traffic for sometime on Sunday evening.
Alerted by local people, police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot around 4 p.m. The firemen fought for more than 30 minutes to put out the flames. The fire had caught on the garbage, especially waste dumped from a marriage hall. Owing to a strong wind, the fire spread fast across one of the twin bridges.
A police officer warned a staff of the marriage hall that it was the fourth occasion fire was reported at the same spot in the recent times. He asked him to ensure that all the wastes, including banana leaves used to serve feast in the hall, should be disposed of at a far-off place to prevent recurrence.
A fireman complained that some cables were passing close to the flames.
