An awareness programme on hazards in printing units and the ways and means to prevent accidents was conducted at the printing unit of The Hindu at Puliyankulam here on Monday.

As per the instructions of District Fire Officer P. Saravanakumar, a team of Fire and Rescue Services Department personnel from Anupanadi fire station conducted the programme.

“We give basic tips on the potential accidents while handling chemicals, at different storage points, and while using machinery at the production units,” Anupanadi Station Fire Officer S. Chezhiyan said.

Even accidental spillage of oil could lead to accidents, he added. The team taught the staff members at the printing unit the safest way of evacuation at times of fire, and effective usage of sprinklers, hydrants and other fire fighting equipment. Shutting down of electric supply and isolation of inflammable materials till the arrival of fire fighters were highlighted during the programme.

The fire fighters also gave them hands-on experience in handling fire extinguishers during the drill.
