Sattur

Fire destroyed a huge quantity of raw materials meant for safety matches stocked in a godown at Sadaiyampatti near here on Wednesday. None was injured.

Three fire tenders from Sattur, Virudhunagar and Kovilpatti fought for nearly six hours to put out the flames, said District Fire Officer K. Karuppaiah.

Police said that a friction while shifting bags of chemical-dipped matchsticks led to the fire. Besides, plain sticks, dipped sticks, packing materials were among those gutted. The fire that started around 9.30 a.m. was put out only around 4 p.m.

Lack of adequate access to the source of fire made fire-fighting difficult, Mr. Karuppaiah said. Sattur Taluk police are investigating.
