Giving the final call to bulk waste generators to cooperate, Corporation Commissioner S. Aneesh Shekar asked those running marriage halls, restaurants, cinema houses and people living in big residential apartments to come closer and work in tandem with the civic body and help keep the city clean.
He was speaking at an interaction session for bulk waste generators on Swachh Bharat Mission to create an awareness at MADITSSIA Hall on Saturday.
There were around 500 to 600 marriage halls - small, medium and big. Except for a few, a majority of the halls did not have adequate car parking facility. As a result, roads were occupied. Hence, the marriage hall owners should get a licence from the Corporation soon, he said.
On an average, the city generated 650 to 700 metric tonnes of garbage daily. The Corporation was able to generate power only from 450 tonnes. So, there was an urgent need for the residents to cooperate and render service by segregating waste (bio-degradable and non bio-degradable).
It was a health hazard transporting garbage to Vellaikal, the Corporation’s compost yard.
“Only when people reduced the garbage quantity or adopted safe methods and mechanisms, residents can live in peace,” Dr. Shekar said.
Already, a plant had been installed near Meenakshi Temple’s car park area in association with Exnora, where vegetable waste was composted, recycled and manure was produced. Likewise, in Mastanpatti Pazhathottam, a 10-tonne capacity plant had been installed. He urged all bulk waste generators to visit the facility.
