For P.S. Bharathy of Iyer Bungalow, it was a dream come true moment when she met former President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam during his visit to Madurai in 2007. She was invited by the former President who appreciated her for her national award winning project on the mentally challenged children’s response to fine arts.
Currently pursuing her second year medicine at Madurai Medical College, this 19-year-old student has numerous awards, including ‘Kalai Ilamani’ award given by the State government, to her credit. Last month, she bagged the fourth prize in South Asia-level medical quiz contest conducted by Elsevier Basic Science Olympiad (EBSO) in New Delhi.
Elsevier is a leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services world over. The company works in partnership with global science and health communities to publish more than 2,000 medical journals.
Ms.Bharathy was the only student from Tamil Nadu to have entered the final round of the nail-biting contest. Nearly 16,000 students from Nepal, Pakistan and India took part in the competition.
“I wish to pursue research and develop a vaccine that can prevent mental disorder among people,” Ms.Bharathy said on Thursday.
