Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Melur hogged the limelight on Friday after T. Manasha, a student of the school, bagged the State second rank.
It is the only government school in the district to feature in the list of 31 institutions that churned out district toppers. Manasha, who scored 498 marks, said that special coaching classes on weekends helped her score high marks. “The teachers were a great source of encouragement. They never exerted pressure on me or stressed me out,” she said.
As many as 575 students took the SSLC examinations from the school, the highest among government schools in the district. The school recorded a pass percentage of 92. “As many as 172 students scored above 400 marks this year. Since most of the students are from rural areas, we laid emphasis on coaching them in English and took special classes from January,” said Principal Daisy Nirmala Rani.
The students were given home tests to identify their weak spots, she added.
The school recorded 43 centums in Science and seven in Mathematics.
