Students of Fatima College have produced a documentary to create awareness of the need for creating a plastic-free environment.
“A Clarion Call,” the documentary, produced by first year postgraduate students of English department, in association with DHAN Foundation, was released by Jospin Nirmala Mary, Principal, and Francis Pauline, secretary of Fatima College, here on Wednesday.
P. Krishnamurthy, team leader of Centre for Development Communication of DHAN Foundation, received the first copy of the documentary. The 10-minute documentary focuses on a young girl’s concern to safeguard the environment from plastic. Around 3,500 students studying in Fatima College are able to maintain a plastic-free campus and nurture more than 1,000 trees, but the public have failed to protect the environment, the students have pointed out in the documentary. People, especially women, should take efforts to keep the city clean and free of plastic waste, they have emphasised.
Eighteen students were involved in the production of the documentary, with the assistance of faculty members S. Parvathi and R. Saktheeswari. According to S. Geetha, Head of English department, the students of the department have produced nine documentaries so far. Their documentary “Mayandi Bharathi” produced a few years ago had won a national award, she said.
Students A. Shinee and Mrinalini Lakshminarayanan shared their experiences in producing the documentary. The students visited Naachikulam near Sholavandan, and interacted with the villagers, said Ms. Parvathi.
The students have documented how plastic has become integrated into everyday needs in the form of pet bottles, drinking water pots, shopping bags and several others in the village.
