Prominent writers, artists, academicians and social activists in the city came together to show their support and solidarity for the Anti-Nuke protestors of Kudankulam by observing a one-day dawn-to- dusk token fast at Kaalavasal junction on Saturday.
The protest gained significance as within the stage where the protest was organised, there were poetry recitals, display of paintings, stark images of nuclear disaster affected landscapes and human bodies were displayed.
All the above said revolved around the central theme of nuclear power’s disastrous qualities.
Social activist R. Murali of People’s Union for Civil Liberties, famous writers Konangi, professor Muthumohan, Sundar Kaali, I. Muthaiah, Unjai Arasan, V. Alex, Stalin Rajangam, A. Muthukrishnan, Sundara Vanthiya Thevan, A. Jaganathan, artist Babu, Advocate Rajni and Dr. Sangeetha were among the others who participated in the fast.
The protestors condemned the State government’s action to suppress the anti-nuclear protests through state violence. They said that they were not only against Kudankulam nuclear plant but are against installation of nuclear power plants anywhere in the country.
The speakers at the protest meeting condemned the media’s role in suppressing facts about the peaceful struggles of the anti-nuke protestors and said they were functioning as the voice of the State and were involved in constructing a reality that nuclear power is most needed for India to become super power.
