A man masquerading as a civil servant, who duped a gullible victim of several lakhs, fell into the clutches of the police.
Madhu Ganesh Menon, claiming to be an Indian Administrative Service officer, allegedly dispossessed a man of Rs.43 lakh on the promise of securing his daughter a medical seat.
He was arrested by a police team from the District Crime Branch, led by Inspector of Police M. Thinakkaran, in New Delhi on September 20. Ganesh had been absconding ever since a complaint was lodged last month.
Ganesh was produced in a court here which remanded him in judicial custody. His father Sridharan Menon was also arrested.
The police said Ganesh, who grew up in New Delhi, aspired to become a civil servant and pretended to be an IAS officer, handing out visiting cards showing that he was with the Prime Minister’s Office.
Ganesh was approached by the complainant, Suresh, through a common friend, Narayanan, seeking a medical seat for his daughter. “Suresh paid him Rs.43 lakh in instalments in May 2013,” the police said.
When Ganesh did not deliver on the promise, Suresh went to the police. When he demanded the return of the money, Ganesh allegedly threatened him with a ‘toy’ pistol, police added.
During interrogation, Ganesh claimed to be an IAS officer, now placed under suspension.
The police have charged him with criminal conspiracy, cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery and criminal intimidation.
