‘United Agri Tech 2014,’ a four-day fair which displays a range of products related to agriculture, was inaugurated at Tamukkam Grounds on Thursday.

Speaking about the exhibition, S. Kathirvel, the organiser, said that the exhibition was aimed at exposing farmers to latest agricultural technologies available in the market that could be put to good use by them. “There are over 120 stalls here showcasing the latest in technology and machinery, organic fertilizers and hybrid seeds. They will be demonstrated by experts. The farmers can also consult them on best practices to adopt in their fields,” he said.

Among the stalls was one showcasing solar-powered equipment such as pumps, lights and motors. “The government offers subsidies for solar-powered equipment that can be effectively used for farming. Many farmers remain unaware of this and we hope to reach out to them,” a salesperson said.

Products prepared from millets, honey and other healthy raw materials have been kept for sale for the benefit of the public who visit the exhibition. “Since there is an awareness of the benefits of healthy foods, selling products such as millet biscuits, snacks and fruit extracts for juices has been profitable for us in fairs such as this,” said P. Saraswathi of Shri Parameshwari Foods. Hybrid seeds and organic fertilizers have been kept on display and many agri-entrepreneurs from the State specializing in bio-fertilizers and natural soil boosters have set up stalls.

There are free bus services from Periyar, Mattuthavani and Arapalayam bus stands to the venue.
