With Navarathri fast approaching, most people have begun to source dolls for ‘golu’ (doll arrangements) to be set up in their houses during the celebration, and the Poompuhar Showroom on West Veli Street has put up an exhibition-cum-sale of ‘golu’ dolls.
The dolls, made of paper-mache and clay, have been arranged on four steps in the showroom. “This will give the customers an idea of how much space the arrangement will occupy and how it will look,” a salesperson said.
While there are large individual dolls on sale, it is the innovative doll sets that depict popular festivals, temple rituals and various themes.
“Most customers purchase doll sets every year and come back to the store to look for what they missed the previous year. The wedding set, Garuda vahana procession set and Dasavataram set are some of the items that are in high demand,” said A.N. Xavier, manager of the showroom.
Also on display are small clay fruits and vegetables, Kondapalli and Marapachi dolls. The dolls on display have been sourced from Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Puducherry. The exhibition-cum-sale will be open on all days till October 12.
