Expressing concern over the rise in heinous crimes, particularly, those with caste overtones and communal colour in the southern districts, DGP Ashok Kumar has asked the police top brass here to tackle the issues in the initial stage itself.

Whenever there is an input about a crime, especially with a caste or communal angle, early intervention will pave the way for arresting the problem locally, he told a meeting of senior-level officers here.

After addressing officers in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli on Friday, Mr. Kumar arrived here to hold a meeting with officers from Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar districts.

Indicating that the murders in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli had caused a dent in the image of the police, he said the field officers should examine thoroughly and register cases in an unbiased manner instead of attempting to play down the incidents, according to participants.

Apart from the IGP (south zone) Abhai Kumar Singh, Commissioner of Police (Madurai city) Shailesh Kumar Yadav, DIGs of Police, SPs, DSPs from the six districts participated. The meeting went on for over six hours at the district police office.

The sexual assault on a hearing and speech-impaired girl case reported in Krishnagiri also figured in the meeting.

Instead of altering sections later or delaying the issue, the SHOs should be swift and practical in taking decisions.

One of the participant said that the DGP wanted the SPs to execute all non-bailable warrants pending in the south zone as the number was pretty high. “By effecting arrest, crime rate will fall. Do not allow such persons wander scot free,” Mr. Kumar told the officers.
