Embezzlement of cash

A criminal case of misappropriation of funds to the tune of over Rs.5 lakh has been reported in the Tamil Nadu Special Police Sixth Battalion's polish store and LPG godown, police said here on Wednesday.

Following a complaint from the Battalion Commandant Asra Garg, Commissioner of Police P. Balasubramanian directed the City Crime Branch (CCB) police to register a case.

A preliminary probe suggested that two personnel, cited as accused — Mohan Kumar, a Sub-Inspector and Vijay Kumar, a Havildar (policeman) — were in charge of the polish store and LPG godown situated on the battalion's campus here.

A surprise check at the store and godown revealed that there was a difference between the actual stock and that maintained in the registers. It is said that between 2006 and 2009, there were discrepancies in maintenance of stocks of inward and outward registers. The personnel were accused of having attempted to siphon off the commodities.

A senior police officer supervising the probe said “We are questioning the two policemen and are in the process of gathering more details,” he replied when asked whether they had quantified the exact sum of misappropriation of funds.

The team is also questioning other personnel at the Battalion over the alleged diversion of a truckload of LPG refill cylinders to a private dealer in K. Pudur. Cases have been registered against the two personnel.
