The Election flying squad seized Rs five lakh cash from a car during checks at Singampunari in Sivaganga district last evening in the run up to the April 13 assembly polls.

Acting on a tip off that a car had been parked near a particular spot for a long time, the officials searched it and found the money stashed inside. The car owner did not have proper documents for the cash, they said.

Meanwhile shredded currency notes were found near a blacksmith shop at Suseendram-Akkarai in Kanyakumari district.

Police initially suspected that the notes might have been torn to pieces by someone who feared arrest. However later they found some children playing with the money who told them that they found it from near the shop.

The shop owner said his businessman son had purchased the soiled notes from RBI and was using it in his burner. The iron would melt in the heat produced by the shredded currency notes faster, he said.
