The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption officials on Monday raided the city corporation office in Madurai and seized documents from many offices including the Chief Engineer and Town Planning Department following complaints of irregularities in the implementation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JnURM) schemes in the district.

The DVAC officials said that so far Rs 1,411 crore had been sanctioned to carry out a variety of works in the district such as the Underground Drainage scheme, road facilities, purchase of buses and housing scheme for Below Poverty Line people.

The officials, who began their raid at 10 am, said the complaint over the alleged irregularities had come from the officials within the corporation themselves who had been affected because they did not indulge in malpractices.

They added two Assistant Engineers had already been suspended about three months ago for corruption and some more would be suspended and if necessary arrested, after the enquiry.
