A duo played a trick on a 65-year-old man and stole jewels from his house at Sathangudi near Tirumangalam on Tuesday.

The victim, Surya, was alone since at home his family members had gone out. The duo approached him at around 12.30 p.m. Introducing themselves as his relatives, the strangers said they had come to invite his family for a house warming ceremony. One of them said they found it difficult to get ‘arugampul’ (a kind of grass) for the house warming ceremony and requested Surya to find the grass for them in the vicinity. Surya walked a few yards from the house and returned with the grass and handed it over to them.

After they left, he found gold jewels he kept in a cupboard missing. Surya’s daughter-in-law, Pandeeswari, has lodged a complaint with the Tirumangalam Taluk police.
