A large number of womenfolk from Arumbanoor, Muniandipuram, Indra Priyadarshini Nagar and peripheries near Othakadai here assembled in front of the District Collector's office seeking distribution of potable water in their localities.

Being Monday, the Collector's office, usually witnesses huge crowd from far and near.

The arrival of womenfolk with empty pots led to chaos for a while in the vicinity.

These women wanted to meet the Collector in person and express their mental agony.

The 200 plus strong crowd was given an assurance by the revenue and police officers that action would be taken immediately to supply drinking water through tankers and subsequently bore wells would be dug in the colonies.

Switch on street lights

The petitioners also pleaded with the officials to provide street lights and also underground drainage facilities.

Within about a span of about an hour, another group of persons from Thirumangalam arrived at the collector's office campus and distributed pamphlets to the public and submitted a memorandum to the Collector seeking regular supply of drinking water.

A week ago, Collector U. Sagayam told reporters during a district tour that there was no threat to drinking water supply in the district. Wherever there was shortage or problems in distribution, the block development officers have been instructed to examine the possibility of digging bore wells and funds for this purpose is also no problem, he had assured.
