As part of landscaping with garden and levelling the ground on the District Police Office premises on Alagarkoil Road, the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation has been filling a pond in front of the imposing two-storey building.

Renovation and minor repair works are going on in the facility which was inaugurated in August 2011. The building was built on a 3.25 acre site at a cost of ₹3.50 crore. Work is also under way to set right cracks on the building walls.

The DPO premises lacked adequate parking space as the ground level is lower on all sides, except for the northern side of the building.

“A proposal has been made to provide a landscaped garden on the front side and after due approval the pond filling work has been taken up by Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation,” Superintendent of Police N. Manivannan said.

According to a police housing corporation engineer, the pond is being filled up as it does not serve its purpose any more. In the last five years, it did not receive much water as the supply channel remained cut off, he said.

Tank being desilted

The corporation has also taken up the work of desilting Marudankulam tank and strengthening its bund with the permission of Public Works Department.

The tank with a spread of 65 acres is being desilted at a cost of ₹16 lakh. “We are able to use the excess earth (soil) dug up from the tank to fill up the three acres of land on the DPO premises,” an engineer said.

Around 1,500 lorry-loads of soil would be dumped around the building to raise the ground to the level of Alagarkoil Road.

A good portion of the pond in the middle has been filled with the soil.

Mr. Manivannan said that a Police Welfare Canteen would come up on the DPO premises.

The canteen that was functioning in a hall on the ground floor was closed after the contractor could not run it. It was subsequently converted into a storeroom.

Besides, a good parking lot for the vehicles of police officials and visitors would be provided, the Superintendent of Police added.
