In a case of dowry harassment, a 27-year-old woman complained that the former State Minister Pon. Muthuramalingam of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was siding with the family of her husband that was demanding more dowry.
The All Women Police Station at Tirupparankundram cited the DMK leader as the sixth accused after the husband, who is working in Australia, and his family members.
The woman complained that even after her family members gave 110 sovereigns of gold, 5 kg of silver, Rs.2.5 lakh cash and Rs.2 lakh worth household articles, the husband’s family were demanding more dowry.
Mr. Muthuramalingam had arranged for the marriage between the girl from Coimbatore and the bridegroom, son of a retired Deputy Tahsildar, in 2008. After the problem between the two families arose, Mr. Muthuramalingam was trying to support the family of the husband, the woman complained.
The case has been booked against seven persons under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code, including for criminal breach of trust, forgery for the purpose of cheating, using a forged document as genuine and conspiracy and the provisions of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Woman Act 1998.
